Q. What archival, rare book, and rare manuscript materials are digitized?

Special Collections is continually digitizing materials from our collections, such as letters, printed brochures, pages from rare books, and photographs. A number of digital resources can be found on the Smith Digital Collections web page. Be sure to visit Five College Compass to explore unique digital collections from Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges.

Because digitization is labor intensive, requiring significant systems support to manage, preserve, and provide access to the content, digitization is a long-term program. Further, due to copyright, privacy, and confidentiality, not all digital content can be placed on the open web. Researchers are encouraged to send questions to our general email account, specialcollections@smith.edu. If you have a specific question for anyone on staff, please visit the Staff & Contacts page.
