Q. Can I use Special Collections materials even if I’m not related to any institution?

During COVID-19: Special Collections is currently closed to visitors, but you can submit research requests to specialcollections@smith.edu.

When full on-campus services resume: Yes! Smith College Special Collections is a public repository.

  • All are welcome to explore the resources, materials and collections we steward.
  • Any researcher is welcome to come to Special Collections during our open hours to speak with a reference desk staff person about their research interests, projects and questions.
  • The collections are also discoverable through our many databases and collection lists. See Research & Collections. Most of our collections are described on the web, in both the Five College Library catalog and in our online finding aids.
  • Special Collections also has a growing collection of digitized images relating to women's history dating from the early nineteenth century to the present. You can find some of these images in the Five College Compass Digital Collections.
